Amazing Amphibians
Frogs On The Edge!

Amazing Amphibians: Frogs on the Edge is located in Eagle Canyon, and houses about 12 different species of Amphibians, from familiar local toads, to exotic salamanders and colorful tropical frogs.

The exhibit was conceived as part of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) Year of the Frog and brings awareness to the current global amphibian extinction crisis. The Living Desert and institutions the world over are focusing conservation and research efforts to bring awareness to the importance of amphibians and the current crisis. Fifty percent of the approximately 6,000 amphibian species are threatened with extinction; 165 species are believed to have already gone extinct; and 500 species will not survive the threats that face them without immediate intervention. Amphibians have been compared to the canaries in the coal mine.

Amphibians, because of their permeable skin, are more susceptible to environmental pollutants and may act as a warning sign of unsafe environmental conditions that could seriously impact our health. They provide vital biomedicines, including compounds for analgesics, antibiotics, and treatments for diseases such as depression, stroke, seizures, Alzheimer's, cancer, and AIDS.
