Barrel Cactus Garden

A rounded or “barrel” shape is a common characteristic of many species of cacti.barrel-cactus

This form provides a low ratio of surface area to plant volume, meaning less area is exposed to the desiccating effects of heat and wind.

A cross section shows a central hollow cylinder of wood filled with pith. This provides support. It is surrounded by soft tissue that acts as a reservoir for food and water storage. The waxy outer “skin” reduces water loss. The spines shade the plant and drip water back to the root zone.
