African Animals
African Desert Animals have the same challenges for survival as species from other continents;
however, many of the largest animals come from the continent of Africa. The sparse vegetation in
arid environments of Africa forces these mega-fauna to spread out over large territories to find
enough food, requiring them to communicate over great distances with herd members. Many of these
species use infrasound (very low frequency) to communicate, producing sound too low for human ears
to detect. These very low sound waves travel through solid objects such as brush, trees, and even
buildings, allowing herds to communicate over great distances. Animals that communicate with
infrasound include: giraffe, elephants, crocodiles, whales, and hippopotamus.
