Things to do and see at The Living Desert

Fanciful Flyers
Butterflies and Hummingbirds

Fanciful Fliers is a 3,000 square foot walk-through exhibit filled with hundreds of fluttering butterflies and a dozen zippy hummingbirds within the setting of a tranquil garden. The thirty or so possible species of butterflies in the garden are all from North America, many from our Desert Southwest. They are as colorful as their names; Painted Lady, Tiger Swallowtail, Orange-barred Sulphur, Luna Moth and Zebra Longwing. The hummingbirds are all from the Desert Southwest and include the Anna’s, Costa’s, Black-chinned, Rufous and Broad-billed Hummingbirds. If you position yourself between the bird and the sun, you will be amazed at the iridescent colors of the male’s gorget. The garden includes over 60 species of butterfly and hummingbird friendly plants, many of which are in bloom.

Your experience in the exhibit can be a guided tour with one of our trained exhibit hosts or you can just sit on a shaded bench in the tranquility of the garden with the sound of flowing water and the dazzle of floating butterflies and iridescent hummingbirds for your company.

The cost of entry is free for members and $2 for non-members. The exhibit is open from early October through the end of April, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. The exhibit also includes a gift shop to satisfy all of your needs for butterfly and hummingbird shopping.
