The Living Desert's Presents Niara!
The name "NIARA" (pronounced: nee-AH-rah)
An entry submitted by a member of The Living Desert was chosen as the name to be bestowed upon the female giraffe calf born on October 28, 2011. The name "NIARA" (pronounced: nee-AH-rah), a Swahili girls' name meaning "one with high purpose". The Living Desert asked for the public's help in the naming process. Over 1,000 entries were submitted during the month-long period, with the zookeepers narrowing down the list to the top five names. CEO, Stacey Johnson, had the privilege of choosing the final winning name. The winning name was submitted by Jeannie Green of Ashland, OR.
Niara, who at birth on October 28 weighed a healthy 50.5 kilograms (111.1 lbs) and stood 5 ft, 9 inches tall, become an instant star attraction at The Living Desert after a successful introduction the public. True to her pack-orientation, she has stayed close to her mother's side and has been participating with the adult giraffes during public feedings.
