Gecko Explorers

Gecko ExplorersCome join the coolest Desert Jr. Naturalist Club in the Desert!  Gecko Explorers offers children the unique opportunity for exploration through direct observations and hands-on experiences of our desert plants and animals.  Come see for yourself how cool the desert can really be!  Classes will include a behind the scenes tour at The Living Desert, an opportunity to get up close and personal with a critter.  Come see what it’s all about! 

Classes are taught on Saturdays beginning November 3, 2007 thru April 5, 2008 with the following exceptions:  No class on 11/24/07, 12/22/07, 12/29/0, 1/05/08 & 3/22/08.
Sessions run from 9:00 – 12:00 p.m. for ages 5-12. 
 Please bring a snack and water bottle.


Gecko Explorer activities vary weekly, and include

  • Exploring behind the scenes at The Living Desert
  • Creating enrichment objects for the animals
  • Drawing plants and animals through direct observations
  • Behind the scenes visits at our Zoo Kitchen
  • Talking to Zoo Keepers
  • Studying animal behavior & habitats
  • Geology hikes (formations of mountains, rocks, sand)
  • Nature related crafts, games & songs
  • Gecko Explorers will express their awareness of the deserts’ beauty, diversity and interdependence with inventive arts and crafts projects.

Themes for 2007-2008 Gecko Explorers Classes will include:

  • Adaptations of desert animals & plants
  • African animals & plants
  • Conservation and Preservation
  • Beauty of Nature
  • World of Insects
  • Desert Geology
  • Basic Anatomy of Reptiles, Birds, Mammals, Trees & Plants
