Happenings What's New Amazing Amphibians: Frogs on the Edge
Visitors can learn about the amazing world of amphibians in the Eagle Canyon Reptile Facility, which will house several different species of amphibians, from familiar frogs and toads, to exotic salamanders and caecilians. With as many as one-half of the world's amphibian species in danger of becoming extinct in the near future – the largest mass extinction since the disappearance of the dinosaurs – The Living Desert has joined with other members of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, (WAZA), in an effort to develop, promote, and guide short-term captive management of threatened amphibians. Because many Amphibians live in tropical environments, this is The Living Desert’s only exhibit to go beyond the desert. Now is your chance to get closer to these exotic creatures!
On October 6, 2007, visitors to The Living Desert can watch nature transform in Butterflies Alive!, Riverside County’s first butterfly exhibit. This exhibit will feature hundreds of North American butterflies representing over 30 different species roaming freely in a spacious screened house, where children of all ages and adults alike can experience magic wings and flying things. The Living Desert Butterflies Alive! runs through April, 2008 and is open daily from 10:00am to 4:30pm, with the last admission at 4:00pm. Butterflies Alive! admission is $2.00 for Non-members and free to members of The Living Desert. Do you want an experience of a lifetime, a spiritual flash that forever connects you with nature? Visit The Living Desert’s new walk-through butterfly exhibit. This experience is a close encounter of the third kind that puts you in the proximity with butterflies of which some that have exotic and mysterious names like Queen, Mourning Cloak, Painted Lady, Julia, Cloudless Sulphur, Malachite, Zebra Longwing, Gulf Fritillary, Giant Swallowtail and many others. The butterfly house will include a beautiful butterfly themed gift shop and a Pupa Emergence room. The third stage of a butterfly’s life is known as a pupa. The pupa forms a chrysalis shell from which emerges a beautiful butterfly. Visitors will be able to view one of the miracles of nature right before their eyes. With lush gardens, tranquil fountains and beautiful butterfly benches, this exhibit is a must see experience for the whole family.
