Native Bee Garden

There are 1600 different species of bees in California and at least 100 different kinds of bees that occur in this garden!

Unlike honey bees, most native bees live a solitary lifestyle. They are not part of a social hive system and do not make honey! 70 percent are ground nesters and 30 percent live in preexisting cavities such as cracks in logs and walls.

In California, there are approximately 5000 beautiful flowering plant species and many diverse relationships with the incredibly rich assortment of native bee species. Native bees and flowers have evolved together over millions of years to produce these relationships. Every bee species has its own story. Each has a slightly different biology, seasonality, behavior, and host flower preference.

Grow your own native plant garden! The bees are closely tuned in with native plants to help conserve the natural heritage of California.
