Sage Garden

Sages are part of the large mint family of plants Lamiaceae. Within the mint family, sages are grouped into the genus Salvia. The name “salvia” is derived from the Latin word salvus because many of the plants are reputed to have medicinal value.

Sages are widely used by Native Americans medicinally and for food. The leaves of several species were smoked to relieve lung congestion. The seeds of chia, Salvia columbariae, were especially prized and very nutritious.

Common characteristics of sages include very aromatic foliage and tube shaped flowers. Also, the plants generally have square stems.
