2006 “Tracks in the Sand” Award Honoree David Bamberger

Mr. Bamberger is president and founder of the Bamberger Ranch Preserve, known as “Selah.” Selah was established in 1969, a 5,500 Hill Country Ranch that had been severely overgrazed and suffered from a loss of plant and animal species. Today, after what has been described as the largest habitat restoration project on private land in the state of Texas, the Ranch serves as a model of land and wildlife stewardship. The Ranch is dedicated to environmental education, conservation and research, and has been host to students, landowners, scientists and conservation organizations. The Ranch has also been the frequent setting for antelope Species Survival Program (SSP) meetings, of which The Living Desert is an active participant. With a strong focus on antelope conservation, Mr. Bamburger and The Living Desert have worked with the American Zoological Associaton (AZA) to protect the Scimitar-horned Oryx and dama gazelle. Since the first SSP Meeting for the Scimitar-horned Oryx in 1986, over 400 Oryx have been produced at no cost to the AZA, an effort enhanced by breeding programs for the recovery and reintroduction of Scimitar-horned Oryx into their former range in North Africa.

Mr. Bamberger is the recipient of numerous awards for conservation, including the National Wildlife Federation’s Conservation Achievement Award, the Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation Education from Garden Club of America, and Good Steward Aware, from the National Arbor Day Foundation.
