Safety Manager

Job Title:Safety Manager 

Department:Human Resources 


Reports to:Director of Human Resources 


The Safety Manager develops, implements and oversees the security, health and safety programs which provide guidelines and resources to ensure the goals of individual departments and the organization as a whole are met. The components of the programs will create a secure and safe culture that is proactive and continually improving. Key components of the programs will minimally include:  hazard identification and risk assessment, standardized operations, guidelines and procedures, contractor management, guest safety, team member training programs incident investigation, ICS and emergency management and the monitoring of safety and health regulations with provided technical support to ensure compliance. As the overseer of all facets of security the manager will also ensure systems/process fidelity, and that all appropriate and necessary trainings and certifications are current, compliant and sufficient for the secure and safe operations of The Living Desert. 


General:  Leads, drives, and promotes a culture of safety and security excellence for team members, guests, animals and the broader Zoo community. 

Health and Safety Program:  Develops, implements and deploys the health and safety program from the Zoo with the aim of zero accidents and/or incidents, including the establishment of improvement goals and operational safety activities and drills. 

Security:  Oversees all Zoo security activities, security planning and emergency planning and response process. 

Community Interaction: Develops and maintains strong and effective partnerships with public law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency agencies, assist with plans and investigations as requested in order to ensure information exchange and mutual assistance. 

Regulatory Compliance: Maintains records and documents in compliance with all regulatory and internal record keeping requirements and provides statistical data on safety performance.

This position oversees our overnight security contractors.  This position requires the ability to interact effectively with peers in cross-functional roles in order to be successful.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to walk. The team member frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance’ and talk or hear. The team member is occasionally required to stand; sit; stoop; kneel; crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The team member must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  

DISCOMFORT/RISKS:  Work involves exposure to elements, such as extreme temperature, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. 

Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require basic safety precautions. 

HOLIDAY/EVENING WORK:  Ability to work nights, evenings, weekends and holidays and/or irregular hours. Ability to handle situations where the team member may come in contact with potentially abusive/threatening people/animals in enforcement of regulations/animal escapes. 

TRAVEL:  Travel will be required for picking up supplies, attending educational seminars, training and conferences.
