Prepare to experience a free-flying, colorful spectacle as The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens announces the grand opening of its Lorikeets: Winged Wonders aviary on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 9 a.m.

More than 60 lorikeets and lories will fly about in the 2,500 square-foot walk-through aviary that will feature numerous perches, trees and bushes. The aviary allows for the lorikeets to fly freely, while guests observe their natural behaviors and interactions, as well as have the opportunity to feed the birds with a cup of nectar. There will be numerous sub-species of lorikeets and lories, including the rainbow lorikeet and blue-streaked lory.

Lorikeets and lories are unique members of the parrot family, native to Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea that are adapted to feeding on the nectar and pollen of trees, such as eucalyptus and the melaleuca. They are known for their dramatic red, green, blue, yellow and orange colors and are sometimes called brush-tongue parrots for the tiny hair-like structures on their tongues that assist them in gathering up nectar from a flower. Their strong feet and flexible legs allow them to hang from the tiniest of branches in order to reach the desired flowers. They range from the size of a small parakeet to the size of a medium sized parrot, about 10 to 12 inches.

“The lorikeets aviary gives visitors the opportunity to get up close and learn about these special birds,” said Allen Monroe, President & CEO of The Living Desert. “I’m looking forward to seeing our guests of all ages interact with these beautiful, rainbow-colored birds and watch as the lorikeets may land on their hands, arms and even their head to get a sip of sweet nectar.”

The aviary will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Aviary entrance fee is $2 members; $3 non- members and includes all-day access. Guests are invited to feed the lorikeets with cups of nectar that will be available for purchase for $3 per feeding cup. All proceeds support The Living Desert’s animal care, conservation, and education programs.

The Living Desert is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information visit www.LivingDesert.org or call 760-346-5694.
