Today’s Hours: 8:00am – 5:00pm
Though World Giraffe Day isn’t officially until June 21, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is celebrating the tallest animal on the shortest day of the year — December 21.
Join us at the Zoo for a special celebration, where you’ll learn about the many giraffe conservation projects The Living Desert and our partners are leading. Guests will have the opportunity to go onto the giraffe habitat from 8:00am-10:00am to explore the savanna while the animals are off-habitat. Giraffe feeding will open back up at 10:30am.
The more people understand and address the threats giraffe face, the more hope there is to save them from extinction. Together, we can make a difference.
Over the last 30 years, giraffe populations have decreased by almost 40% due to habitat loss, insufficient law enforcement, ecological changes, and climate change, but few people know about their dire situation. In this “silent extinction”, there are now roughly 100,000 remaining in their natural habitat — meaning there are fewer wild giraffe in Africa than elephants.
We ask that you join us in learning about and spreading awareness of these threats so that, together, we can find solutions and build a better future for all desert wildlife.
How Can You Help?
🦒 Eat Like a Giraffe: Incorporating just one vegan or vegetarian meal each week can have a positive impact on both climate change and the preservation of giraffe habitats. By choosing plant-based options, you can help reduce the demand for agricultural land and lower the carbon footprint associated with animal agriculture.
🦒 Raise Awareness: Become a conservation influencer and encourage friends and family to join efforts in protecting these incredible creatures.
🦒 Shop Sustainably: Be mindful of your consumer choices. Support sustainable and eco-friendly products to reduce demand for resources that contribute to habitat loss.
🦒 Travel Safely: If you visit regions where giraffe inhabit, choose responsible wildlife tourism operators that prioritize conservation and ethical practices.
