Adult Volunteer Program
These passionate ambassadors are essential in helping guests plan their visit, learn more about the plants and animals throughout the zoo, inspire conservation action, and so much more!
For example, our volunteers are key players in facilitating hands-on adventure at the Petting Kraal, guiding guests through the interactive learning opportunities at the Discovery Center, and interpreting the important medical care and veterinary procedures that take place in the Tennity Wildlife Hospital.
Choo-choo-choose to Volunteer with Trains!
Bighorn Railroad volunteers support with the daily operations of the Zoo's G-scale model railroad systems and locomotives and participate in the maintenance of tracks, trains, electrical and lighting systems, displays, buildings, landscape, and much more!
To become a volunteer, mark “Trains” as an area of interest on the volunteer application.

“Volunteering at The Living Desert is the ‘Best Day Ever’! Where else can you enjoy the sun, have fun and receive an education about animals, plants and the zoo.”
Cathy D.
“The best thing I ever did for myself when I moved to the Desert was to become a volunteer at The Living Desert. [This zoo] is a rare gem in our community and I am proud to be one of the many volunteers who greet and educate our guests who come from all over the world.”
Cindy S.
“Volunteering at The Living Desert has been an absolute pleasure. It’s a great way to give back with the opportunity to be in a beautiful setting while engaging with guests from all over.”
Laura H.
“I volunteer at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens to support its conservation efforts. Volunteering in the conservation department on important projects makes me feel I am making a difference in protecting threatened species.”

What are the perks of being a volunteer?
- Free entry to TLD on days you volunteer.
- Invitations to volunteer events and activities.
- Service hours can earn you a free membership.
- Make new friends and build relationships.
- Discounts in our Gift Shop and restaurants.
Are there fees associated with volunteering?
All volunteers must undergo a background check, which there is a small charge for. We will provide one t-shirt to you, but additional shirts or different styles (such as polo shirts or long-sleeve shirts) may be purchased.
Can I volunteer with a friend or family member?
Yes, but schedules are first come, first serve. We can’t guarantee you will both work the same duty station at the same time each day.
Can I bring guests to the zoo with me?
If you are visiting on a day you are not volunteering, you and your guests must purchase admission. Guest passes may be purchased at a discount if you have a membership. During times you are volunteering, guests will still have to pay the admission fee. You are welcome to join them after your shift to enjoy the remainder of the day.
